Inquiry called for into bonuses paid on micro-flat conversions

An inquiry is being called for into payments of bonuses on micro-flat conversions from a government fund intended to encourage new home building.

The payments, worth up to £7,500 a room, are being made despite the conversions having less space than the minimum of 37 sq ft for a single-person flat. They become payable when the room is given its own council tax band.

The conversions do not require planning permission.
