Rent-for-life homes that allow tenants more freedoms than the norm, including keeping pets and redecorating to their own taste, are becoming increasingly available.
Built and managed by institutional investors eager to attract tenants who will stay for several years, the built-to-rent homes also offer luxuries such as rooftop gardens.
Some £50bn of investment is expected for the sector by 2020, according to estimates by Knight Frank.
