Ireland scraps fast-track planning for housing schemes

Fast-track approval for housing projects will be scrapped in Ireland.

Under the new arrangements approved by the cabinet, applications for large-scale residential developments will once again be submitted to local authorities.

This will replace the Strategic Housing Development system, where developers apply directly to An Bord Pleanála.

The SHD process was introduced in 2017 to speed up the provision of housing and student accommodation.
