Ireland’s largest affordable housing scheme approved

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and the Land Development Agency have received planning consent for 597 affordable homes in the redevelopment at Shanganagh Castle, in Shankill, County Dublin.

It is the largest 100% affordable housing development in Ireland and offers a mix of flats, terraced housing and semi-dettached houses.

The development, located on 20 acres next to Shanganagh Castle, has been designed to achieve the Passive House low energy use standard. It includes sustainable features including low car parking provision, with more bicycle spaces.

There will be 306 affordable rented homes, 200 social rented homes and 91 homes available for purchase under the government’s shared ownership initiative.

Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2021, subject to the final government approval.
