It’s BTR on the dancefloor as Birmingham nightclub plans filed

HJB Investments has filed plans with Birmingham City Council to redevelop a former nightclub at 80 Broad Street into a 42-storey build-to-rent tower.

The site is a Grade II listed former Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, which most recently operated as Zara’s Bar, Grill and Club before closing in 2020.

The developer is looking to change the use and refurbish the site. The submitted application includes demolishing the post-war unlisted extensions to the rear and sides of the building, while retaining the original fabric of the Grade II listed structures.

HJB Investments’ plans include 300 BTR homes, as well as amenities such as residents’ cinema, games room, co-working lounge, gym, nursery and 300 cycle parking spaces.

The site will also include a 12,000 sq ft flexible community facility on the fourth floor, with half of the space being within the listed building.

A 6,000 sq ft viewing platform named GlassWorks would be attached to the facility and would include a café/exhibition area.
