Japanese department store to vacate Piccadilly Circus

Japanese department store Sogo is closing its flagship Piccadilly Circus operation and looking for a new tenant through Jones Lang Wootton.

Sogo, a favourite meeting point for Japanese tourists, will cease trading at the 1,858m2 (20,000 sq ft) store in the Criterion building in March. Nick Ware of JLW said that Sogo was looking for a rent of £1.65m pa.

Sogo controls Criterion Developments, which owns the building.

It is believed that the closure is due to a decrease in the number of Japanese visitors to London following the Asian financial crisis.
