Chancellor Sajid Javid has approved £600m in grants from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund to support five major developments across London and the south of England.
The grant funding will enable infrastructure works, including roads, railways and schools, to support the development of 50,000 homes.
Essex County Council is to receive £218m for the ‘Beaulieu Station and North-East bypass’, to deliver a new railway station and road improvement works to unlock 14,000 homes.
Enfield Council has been awarded a £156m government grant for rail works, road infrastructure and land remediation at the 10,000-home Meridian Water scheme (pictured).
Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community in Essex is to receive £99.9m, while the Greater London Authority will get £80.8m to enable transport upgrades along East London’s Overground line to enable residential development, and Bedfordshire’s Biggleswade development will receive £69.6m.
The grant allocation comes from the £5.5bn Housing Infrastructure Fund, available for local authorities. It follows the previous allocation of £1.3bn to date, supporting the development of 76,500 homes.
Javid said: “I want to see more homes built in the places people want to live, so more people realise the dream of home ownership.”
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick added: “I am determined to help people make the dream of home ownership a reality, and this investment of over half a billion pounds will unlock thousands of new homes by providing essential infrastructure.”
