Jenrick rejects 500-home York scheme to protect local bog

The housing secretary Robert Jenrick has refused an appeal from Barwood Homes to build 516 homes in York.

Jenrick followed the planning inspector’s recommendations and dismissed the application for the residential-led scheme, which includes a community centre and sports pavilion at Moor Lane in Woodthorpe.

It follows objections from a cross-party group of Yorkshire MPs who feared the scheme would have an adverse impact on the nearby Askham Bog.

In the decision letter, Jenrick said development would create “an alien feature at odds with the existing character of the countryside; and that it would fail to respect the intrinsic character and beauty of the landscape”.

He said Askham Bog comprises “a precious and delicate range of habitats” which require human intervention to maintain in a stable condition.
