Jigsaw joins calls for VAT-free shopping

Jigsaw has joined calls to bring back VAT-free shopping.

Beth Butterwick, chief executive of the women’s fashion chain, said London was “being left behind as tourists flock to Paris, Madrid and Milan to shop”.

The VAT-free scheme for international visitors was withdrawn after Brexit. Hundreds of business leaders, including Cadogan chief executive Hugh Seaborn, have called for the scheme to be restored.

A recent study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research found that the economy would be £10bn a year better off if the VAT refunds were reinstated. The Treasury also could benefit from an annual boost of £2bn, it said.
