JJB takes Bristol rates wrangle to High Court

Sportswear retailer JJB Sports has launched a legal battle against Bristol council in a row over a rates bill.

JJB paid more than £277,000 in rates for a retail unit in Bristol before discovering that the store was occupied by Arcadia, according to a High Court writ.

In the wit, JJB says that the rates demands from the council were unlawful, and has demanded back a total of £277,313.89, which the council has refused to repay.

JJB is also seeking interest of £74,401.32 and continuing interest of £60.78 per day.

JJB says that it paid rates for a retail warehouse and premises at unit four, Avonmeads Retail Park, St Philips Causeway, Bristol, from September 1999 before realising that it occupied unit 4A and not unit 4, which was occupied by Arcadia, trading as Outfit.
