John Lewis to anchor €1.2bn Dublin scheme

Department store John Lewis is to anchor the €1.2bn development around the former Carlton cinema site in Dublin city centre.

The store was reported today to have agreed to take a 250,000 sq ft store over four levels at the Chartered Land scheme on Upper O’Connell Street.

Developer Joe O’Reilly lodged a planning application for the 5.5-acre site currently lying derelict last month at the opposite end of O’Connell Street to the River Liffey.

The 1.7m-sq ft scheme will include 108 shops, more than 109 apartments, a sloping public park and restaurant at roof level with panoramic views over Dublin.

It will also include two pedestrian streets and public squares, working around 12 listed structures, some of which will be restored.

It is thought the retailer could pay annual rents of as much as €7m for the store.

Joe O’Reilly also owns Dundrum Shopping Centre and the Pavillions shopping centre in Swords in west Dublin.
