John Lewis ventures outside UK with Dublin debut

John Lewis has secured its first shop outside of the UK in Chartered Land’s proposed €1.2bn mixed-use scheme Dublin Central in Dublin.

The department store will have 250,000 sq ft spread across five floors. The move represents an investment of €50m for John Lewis.

It will form part of the retailer’s existing expansion plans to double the size of its business in the next 10 years.

The 5.5-acre scheme is scheduled to open in 2013.

Chartered Land chief executive Dominic Deeny said: “We are delighted to welcome John Lewis as the anchor tenant for our proposed Dublin Central scheme, which aims to be at the top of the Irish retail hierarchy.

“The John Lewis Partnership is renowned for its pioneering business model and will make a significant contribution to the Henry Street retail mix and further strengthen the city-centre retail offer.”

Gareth Thomas, director of retail design and development at John Lewis, said: “Today’s announcement is significant for John Lewis in that it marks the first move by John Lewis to a location outside the UK.

“We look forward to developing our presence in the Irish market and in due course, delivering our unique and exciting product range and service offering to Irish shoppers.”

Another John Lewis is planned for the Sprucefield Centre near Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
