John Prescott detailed the government’s plans for the future ofhouse-building, in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
The deputy prime minister, who also serves as the environmentminister, said he wanted to maximise the number of homes that can bebuilt in towns and cities over the next 20 years. This would be fosteredby introducing financial incentives into the process, courtesy of the£800m held by local authorities from selling council houses in the1980s.
Prescott said he was considering a tax on green field development. Healso said he wanted supermarket chains to investigate ways of havingsmaller, more numerous stores to which people could walk.
