A joint venture between developers Quality Street and Bett Homes are drawing up plans for a 200-unit residential scheme on part of the 40-acre former Ministry of Defence site on Forthside, Stirling.
The scheme forms a section of a £100m regeneration strategy which Stirling council has recently agreed in principle for the site.
The venture plans to build the homes on 5-acres of land in what will be the first phase of the redevelopment.
A planning application is expected to follow shortly, with construction work scheduled to start in the Autumn.
Duncan Harvie, head of Stirling Ventures, the development arm of Stirling Council’s regeneration services division, said:
“The development is almost the size of the city centre as it is just now. This is a major expansion and transformation that few towns and cities in Scotland will ever have the opportunity to implement.”
Manchester based CTP has already submitted plans for an eight-screen cinema and the conversion of the site’s barracks buildings into housing, offices, and leisure facilities.
Work is expected to start on the cinema in the next few months.
The development will also include a civic square, a 150-bedroom four-star hotel, and a 500 seat conference centre.
The council has also chosen to relocate its headquarters to the Forthside site in a £20m relocation project.
Stirling was awarded city status in 2002 in recognition of its rapid growth during the 1990s.
