New Street Partners, a joint venture between Dutch development and funding company Sofam beheer and the Cuckfield Group, has unveiled plans, designed by architect Gensler, for the redevelopment of New Street bus station in Edinburgh’s Old Town as a £75m mixed-use scheme.
Proposals for the development, to be known as Calton Gate, include 18,580 sq m (200,000 sq ft) of offices, a 250-bedroom four-star Marriott hotel, 30 apartments, a health and fitness club, a new public park, a 120-seat theatre, cafes, bars and restaurants.
A pedestrian route will link the new Scottish Parliament at the eastern end of the Royal Mile to the Executive buildings on Calton Hill via a new bridge at the northern end of the site.
New Street plans to submit a planning application later this year and hopes to start work on site next summer. If all goes to schedule, the scheme should be completed by 2003.
