Kelly comes to rescue of Liverpool Victorian villas

A row of derelict Victorian villas owned by Liverpool Council and housing associations in the inner-city districtof Kensington will have to be sold, Ruth Kelly, communities secretary, has ruled.

The council has wanted to knock them down and planned to rebuild the area using money from the Pathfinder programme.

But Kelly said she was “minded to agree” with residents’ requests not to demolish the buildings.

The buildings have become a symbol of what residents believed to be a deliberate running down of areas to secure regeneration funding.
