London mayor Sadiq Khan has given the nod for plans to redevelop the Whitgift Centre in Croydon by Westfield and Hammerson.
The £1.4bn redevelopment is being built out by the Croydon Partnership, a partnership between the two companies, and will include nearly 1,000 rented homes alongside 500,000 sq m of shops and restaurants.
Alongside redevelopment of the public realm, it will include space for future student accommodation or a hotel.
Khan gave mayoral approval for the project after it received permission from Croydon Council’s planning committee. It will be the third Westfield shopping centre in London.
Khan said: “Today marks a crucial step forward in the regeneration of Croydon town centre.
“This development will play a key role in unlocking the borough’s potential and is set to deliver huge economic benefits to residents and businesses in the borough.”
