Khan plans to introduce London rent control

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will develop rent control plans for London’s private renters.

Khan will develop a “blueprint” to stabilise rents in the capital and make them more affordable.

Deputy mayor for housing and residential development James Murray will work with Karen Buck, Labour MP for Westminster North, to develop plans to make private rents affordable while protecting housing supply and investment.

Khan said: “I have long been frustrated by my lack of powers to help private renters.”

He added that current laws around the private rental sector are “not fit for purpose”.

Khan said: “The arguments for rent control are overwhelming and Londoners overwhelmingly want it to happen.”

After plans have been developed, Khan will lobby government to adopt the changes and allow his tenancy reform, which seeks to end section 21 ‘no fault eviction’ and provide greater security for tenants.
