Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is expected to drop a public inquiry into AFC Wimbledon and Galliard Homes’ proposed major regeneration of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium.
Former mayor Boris Johnson had previously called in Merton Council’s decision to approve the plans, which include a 20,000-seat stadium, 602 homes, shops and a leisure club.
However, he did not make a decision on the development before stepping down as mayor in May.
As Tooting MP, Khan previously raised “serious concerns” about the SW17 development, which has been opposed by local groups on the grounds of transport congestion and parking concerns. However, he has since hinted that he would review his position as mayor of London.
The decision is now expected to be returned to Merton Council, which approved the plans in November before they were called in by Johnson.
An announcement from the mayor of London with full details of his decision is due to be made imminently.
The stadium is earmarked for on Plough Lane, on the site of London’s last greyhound track. The scheme would see AFC Wimbledon return to its spiritual home, after leaving Wimbledon in 1991 following Wimbledon FC’s split, with some members moving to Milton Keynes to form MK Dons.
