Khan warns of risk of homelessness for London’s renters

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has said renters in the capital face imminent homelessness when the government’s evictions ban is lifted next month.

The ban to protect households that have been unable to pay rent during the crisis will expire on 25 June.

From that date court proceedings will resume, leaving a large number of households vulnerable.

Khan said: “Many renters are just one pay cheque away from homelessness. It’s completely unacceptable that London renters should be facing a ticking time bomb where they could lose their home.

“Ministers still have an opportunity to steer us away from this cliff edge and avoid inflicting needless suffering on renters across the country, but they must act now.“

Khan has reiterated his calls for a “triple-lock” protection from the government, with a ban on section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions, changes to section 8 evictions, and an increase to welfare support.
