King’s Speech will be ‘anti-green’

The prime minister is expected to pull even further away from the green agenda in next week’s King’s Speech.

The speech will set the legislative agenda for the next session of parliament, but with an election expected next year, it is likely to feature a number of “intensely political” measures, which will not have time to become law.

Rishi Sunak is understood to want to use the speech to create a clearer dividing line between the Conservatives and Labour. This is despite the Tory’s green U-turn following the Uxbridge & South Ruislip by-election in July failing to translate into improved poll numbers.
