Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) has overtaken Philip Green as second-favourite to win Safeway.
KKR is believed to be in the final stages of completing its proposed bid.
Cantor Index puts the US private equity firm at 3-1 ahead of Green on 7-2. Asda/Wal-Mart is 7-4 favourite.
