Merthyr Council has appointed Knight Frank’s Cardiff team to find a housing developer for the second phase of the Project Riverside scheme at Merthyr Vale.

The 37-acre site of the former Merthyr Vale Colliery is on the market as a whole or in lots, with potential to build 230 houses.

Project Riverside is being jointly funded by the Welsh government and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, which is investing £8.2m in the scheme.

When complete, the scheme is expected to include a school, 230 homes and other facilities such as shops, a nursing home or pub.

The first phase of the project was the Ynysowen Primary School, which was formally opened by the Queen in 2012.

The final phase will involve the regeneration of Taff Street and Crescent Street in Merthyr Vale.

A major new road through the Riverside site was completed in December 2015. Works included footbridges over the River Taff and a new civic amenity site.

Leah Mullin, associate at Knight Frank, said: “With the new spine road in place, the site’s riverside location, and the clear vision of the council and Welsh government, there are strong reasons to anticipate a positive reaction from developers.”
