Knoydart inhabitants to buy 8,499ha estate

Inhabitants of the 8,499ha (21,000 acre) Knoydart estate near Lochinver, north west Scotland, plan to buy it from the receivers.

They will get help from Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the impresario and Chris Brasher, former Olympic athlete, who say they will buy it for about £900,000 and lease it to the Knoydart Foundation, made up of the residents, for 25 years.

Land reform is climbing up the political agenda and Donald Dewar, Scottish secretary, wants local communities to have the right to buy estates at market value when they come for sale. He also intends to provide National Lottery money to help them.
