Kyle Stewart and Swansea-based developer Sylfaen have won planning consent for a 9,300 sq m (100,000 sq ft) shopping centre development in the South Wales town of Merthyr Tydfil.
The scheme, called Beacons Place, will be built on the Welsh Development Agency’s Station Yard site next to the town’s High Street. Work is due to start in August with completion expected in 1998.
“There has already been a very high level of interest in the scheme from leading UK High Street retailers,” Clive Davies, chief executive of Sylfaen.
A projected increase in consumer spending should boost the development’s future prospects. A recent report by the Welsh Economy Research Unit said that total spending in the town will increase by 14% between 1996 and 2001.
DTZ Debenham Thorpe and Stephenson & Alexander are letting agents on Beacons Place.
