L&R plans to transform MoD block

10 Bloomsbury Way

London & Regional has won planning permission for a 235,000 sq ft office redevelopment on 10 Bloomsbury Way, WC1, a former Ministry of Defence building.

The London Borough of Camden approved the plans for the major refurbishment, which adds 10,000 sq ft to the building, as well as providing three ground floor shops.

The MoD surrendered its 170,000 sq ft lease on the building, also known as St George’s Court, in April, as revealed by Estates Gazette.

It has occupied the site since it was built in 1947.

Architect BuckleyGrayYeoman’s plans include adding a new glazed top floor with roof terraces and moving the wedge-shaped building’s main entrance from Bloomsbury Way, to its apex on the corner of Bloomsbury Way and New Oxford Street.

BuckleyGrayYeoman director Matt Yeoman said: “The project represents a huge opportunity to transform the under-utilised end of one of London’s greatest high streets.

“By creating new high-quality uses at ground level and reassessing the footprint of the building we are creating the type of streetscape that is far more appropriate to the enormous and exciting changes that the Crossrail station at Tottenham Court Road will bring to the area.”
