Labour challenges Earl’s Court

The incoming Hammersmith & Fulham Labour-led council is reviewing several property development contracts, including the £8bn Earl’s Court project.

The local elections saw Labour, opponents of the Earl’s Court scheme, defeat the incumbent Conservatives. Now Labour councillors have appointed Guy Vincent, former managing partner of City legal firm Bircham Dyson Bell, who is a newly elected Labour councillor to review several projects. An associated “well advanced” Capital & Counties housing project, Lillie Square, backed by a company connected to Sun Hung Kai Properties co-chairmen, the Kwok brothers, is also being reviewed. The scheme has already got initial permission from the council and the mayor of London for the overall plan although detailed agreements are still to be reached on all parts. Other projects the former Labour opposition objected to included two with Stanhope to redevelop BBC Television City at White City, several council estates, and the redevelopment of the Riverside Studios arts complex.
