Labour may not hit £28bn green pledge in first five years

Labour may not meet its flagship pledge to invest £28bn a year in green projects within its first five years in government.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the plan would only be put into effect if the economy is strong enough.

Speaking to the Resolution Foundation yesterday, Starmer said the investment would be “subject to our fiscal rules” on lowering the level of national debt.

In June he stated that the pledge would only be met in the second half of Labour’s first term, amid concerns about affordability.
