Labour Party Conference: Blair praises urban regeneration in keynote speech

Prime Minister Tony Blair has used his speech at the Labour Party Conference to praise the regeneration of British cities during his administration.

In a speech that almost entirely focused upon domestic issues, he said: “Look at Britain’s cities. A decade ago in decline.

“Today, for all the problems that remain, thriving, waterfronts and canals renewed, business up, employment down and slowly, part by part, the regeneration of the inner city underway.”

“Visit the centre of Birmingham. See Liverpool European City of Culture for 2008. Or Manchester site of the Commonwealth Games.

“Visit the Tyne by the Baltic Centre or Glasgow’s magnificent Pacific Quay or Cardiff Bay.”

He also applauded “indomitable” London, claiming its openness to international influences and investment was key to its victory in the race to host the 2012 Olympics.

He also hinted that London’s governance model an executive mayor and a devolved assembly might be extended to other cities in the UK.

He said: “Next year too we will address the future of local government. A new and ambitious blueprint strengthening the leadership of our cities, giving good councils new freedoms and devolving more power to neighbourhoods.”

The speech also contained a reference to Gordon Brown’s promise to increase homeownership by one million, with policies aimed specifically at young families “struggling” to be first-time buyers.

Blair’s speech was interpreted by members as a declaration that he intends to focus on home issues over the next few years, and his interest in the international stage does not mean he is ready to pass on leadership of the party to Gordon Brown.
