Labour to formally drop £28bn green investment pledge

Labour is to officially abandon its pledge to invest £28bn a year in the green economy.

In an announcement later today, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is expected to drop the £28bn figure from Labour’s “green prosperity plan”, blaming the worsening public finances under the Conservative government.

Starmer pledged to keep the commitment as recently as Monday, but shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has been arguing privately that the plan needs to be dropped.
