Lack of paths on new estates forces people into their cars

Too many housing estates are being built without footpaths or green space, leading to fears that residents are being pushed into “car dependency”.

An analysis of residential developments in England found that large numbers of homes had been “built around the car”, fuelling congestion levels in nearby towns and cities.

On some estates as much as 40% of land was “taken up by the needs of the car”, with a focus on roads, parking spaces, driveways and garages.
