Laguna Developments has won consent for its plans to redevelop Mid-Glamorgan council’s former offices on Greyfriars Road as the first mixed-use scheme of its kind in Cardiff.
A three-storey extension on top of the existing 1960s building will house 36 apartments, with the remainder of the building becoming either a 212-bedroom hotel or 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) of offices. The ground floor has been designated for two restaurant units and a health & fitness centre.
Martin Morris, development manager at Laguna, said: “We’re talking to three hotel operators and to office operators. There’s great demand for offices here, so it may be more sensible for us to keep the building’s existing use. We’ll make a decision by the end of the year.”
The London-based developer has paid the Welsh Development Agency around £5.75m for the site. Completion fo the scheme is due for the end of 2001.
King Sturge advised the WDA.
