Lamington Group sets sustainability targets for apartment hotels

Lamington Group has unveiled plans to achieve whole-life carbon net zero across the future development and operation of its apartment hotels.

The developer’s goal for its “hometels”, operated by room2, forms part of its 2030 Net Zero Carbon Roadmap.

Its room2 Net Zero Building Specification will be used for the development of all its future hometels, reducing embodied carbon throughout the design stage and achieving operational net zero throughout the buildings’ lifetimes.

Measures include the use of low-carbon construction methods and materials; purchasing 100% renewable energy during construction; and the hiring of specialist consultants.

Lamington managing director Robert Godwin said: “Despite buildings accounting for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, the hospitality sector in particular has been left behind within the real estate industry.

“We are in a strong position to set the benchmark for best-practice sustainability initiatives in this space, and align ourselves with similarly minded partners as we embark on our growth strategy.”

At group level, Lamington has committed to achieve net zero carbon across scopes 1 and 2 by 2030 using science-based targets and by tracking and minimising scope 3 emissions. It will renovate its serviced apartment portfolio, averaging eight retrofitted units each year from 2023.

Other measures include the use of green leases across long-let portfolio, which will require tenants to move to 100% renewable tariffs by 2022.
