Lancashire delivers Old Trafford makeover plans

Lancashire County Cricket Club has revealed plans for the redevelopment of its Old Trafford ground, which form part of a £200m regeneration proposal for the neighbouring area.

The BDP-designed scheme includes two new grandstands with a maximum capacity of 25,000, alongside new conferencing, hotel, media and player facilities and a redeveloped pavilion.

A new outfield will also be installed, allowing quicker drainage and re-orientation of the wicket.

Susan Williams, leader of Trafford council, said: “We warmly welcome the proposals as a basis for wider consultation.

“We fully support the club’s ambitions to secure the future of international cricket in the North West and we look forward to it gaining a richly deserved international profile.”

The wider Old Trafford scheme involves a development partnership between Ask Developments, Tesco, Trafford council and Stretford High School.

A 50-acre mixed-use development including business, residential, retail and leisure space is proposed, with the potential for 750,000 sq ft of new development.

Trafford council is currently considering a series of options for the listed Trafford Town Hall on Talbot Road, which forms part of the development site.

A planning application for the cricket ground will be submitted immediately, with work due to be completed in time for the 2013 Ashes Test series.
