Land Securities and AMP Asset Management have lodged a planning application for the £400m redevelopment of Martineau Square in Birmingham City Centre.
The developer is proposing a 111,480 sq m (1.2 m sq ft) mixed scheme to be re-named Martineau Galleries and with frontages on Corporation Street, Union Street and High Street.
Martineau Galleries will comprise two anchor stores of 32,515 sq m (350,000 sq ft) and 26,012 sq m (280,000 sq ft) as well as 80 shops and 3,000 car parking spaces. There will also be 27,870 sq m (300,000 sq ft) leisure facilities including cinemas, a health and fitness centre and a hotel.
While LandSec’s director Bob de Barr believes the city’s current retail offer is lacking, his scheme will be in direct competition with Hammerson’s redevelopment of the Bull Ring, which will provide 92,900 sq m (1m sq ft) of new shopping.
Lunson Mitchenall and Harrison & Co are the agents.
