LandAid launches £1m coronavirus crisis fund for homeless

Property industry charity LandAid has launched what it hopes will be a £1m emergency fund to help young homeless people and charities supporting them during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Covid-19 Emergency Fund will help charities to provide young homeless people with necessities as well as emergency support.

The effort has raised £170,000 so far and has the backing of founding partners Helical, Knight Frank, Landsec and M&G.

LandAid is asking other businesses from across the real estate industry to join the initiative, as well as asking individuals to contribute £36.10, which it says will help a young person in food poverty buy food for a week.

Alistair Elliot, senior partner and group chairman at Knight Frank, described the fund as “the real estate sector’s opportunity to show its collective strength”.

Paul Morrish, chief executive at LandAid, said: “We understand that these are difficult times, and the effects on the economy and sector, on people, business and families will be acute and far-reaching, but we also know that the homelessness charities we support are facing huge challenges to continue to help vulnerable young people. We hope that the support of the property industry could make a real contribution to those in society who really need it today, and in the coming months.”
