Landlord screens new options for failed Bermondsey cinema

The owner of a cinema in south London is trying to rewrite the script for the property after the operator went bust and left it with little hope of refilling the space.

Oval Properties bought 10 Bermondsey Square, SE1, in May 2022. At the time, the ground floor was occupied by cinema operator Kino, which operated a single screen.

According to change of use documents filed with Southwark Council by planning consultancy Turley, Kino had not paid rent for at least 18 months by that time, and then missed rental and service charge payments to Oval. Kino went into voluntary liquidation in January 2023 and the space is now vacant.

Oval wants to change the use class of the space so that it could be used for a variety of other business types.

A report from consultancy USP lodged alongside the change of use application said a new cinema operator was unlikely to be found given the size of the site, and that the location was unsuitable for office space, but that potential new uses included food and drink, a gym or a nursery.
