Landlords braced for rent quarter day

Landlords are bracing themselves for another rent quarter day today with predictions of further retail administrations this year.

Furniture chain, Dwell, closed its doors on Thursday last week with 23 stores affected.

Vacancy rates seem to be creeping higher, but, according to the Local Data Company’s Matthew Hopkinson, this isn’t necessarily the case.

“Vacancy at the moment, in terms of retail vacancy, has been very stable. It’s been at 14% and we haven’t seen the bad guys getting worse. It’s leveled out,” he said.

“When you look at the numbers, we still have 45,000 empty shops up and down the country and that’s one of the problems that needs to be rectified.”
