Landlords are increasingly rejecting young people as prospective tenants, instead preferring to let to older tenants, according to research by Sheffield Hallam University.
Concern about younger people’s ability to pay is a key factor in a third of landlords deciding to cut back on renting to that group. The report also found that two-thirds of landlords would not rent to under-35s on housing benefit or universal credit, while half would not rent to students.
The fall in the number of landlords who will let to certain under-35s represents a challenge to the government’s policy approach, the report’s author, Ben Pattinson, said.
