LandSec outlines Liverpool shopping centre plans

Land Securities has outlined further details of its proposed improvements to two shopping centres in Liverpool.

The company has completed feasibility studies of the St Johns and adjacent Clayton Square shopping centres to assess opportunities for improvements.

The shopping centres are located on a 10-acre city-centre site at one of the gateways to Grosvenor’s £900m retail-led regeneration Liverpool One.

Improvements to the centres will be carried out to avoid disruption during Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, with the St Johns refurbishment scheduled to commence in early 2009 for completion in 2011.

Nick Davis, development director at Land Securities said: “We believe that both properties would benefit from a programme of refurbishment, however this would not involve a demolition and rebuild.

“We are currently discussing our proposals with Liverpool city council and will widen the consultation to include tenants, shoppers and surrounding communities in the autumn.

“It is likely that Land Securities will be in a position to submit a planning application to the City Council later this year for Clayton Square and early 2007 for the upgrading of St Johns.

“It is proposed that Clayton Square will be refurbished during 2007 with completion by the end of the year.

“We are mindful not to cause disruption to St Johns during the City’s year of Capital of Culture and will therefore continue to asset manage St Johns until early 2009 when the refurbishment can then commence – to be completed in 2011.”
