Last decade saw rise in number of towns affordable for key workers

The number of towns deemed affordable for key public sector workers has increased to 65, or more than one in 10, from just 6% in 2007, according to lender Halifax’s housing economist, Martin Ellis.

Since 2012, however, the figure has fallen. In that year, 155 towns were deemed affordable.

Significant affordability issues exist for key workers in London and the southeast, while northern England, Scotland and Wales have the largest concentration of affordable housing, Ellis said.
