LCR plans Banksy tunnel restaurants

London and Continental Railways has submitted a planning application for a new dining destination at Leake Street Arches in Waterloo, SE1.

The plans, if approved by Lambeth council, would refurbish the arches in a Corstorphine+Wright-designed project.

Union Street partners acted as development consultant.

Leake Street, also known as the “Banksy tunnel” or “graffiti tunnel”, is one of London’s largest and most popular street art locations. The Leake Street Arches are situated beneath the former Eurostar terminal at Waterloo Station.

The proposed scheme would include eight units totalling up to 25,000 sq ft within the arches designed predominantly for cafés, bars and restaurants.

Public realm improvements to the area’s lighting, security and surfaces are also proposed.

LCR development director Adrian Lee said: “Waterloo is currently undergoing significant change with a range of high-profile large-scale developments being built or proposed in the area. The Leake Street Arches present an excellent opportunity to build on Waterloo’s existing cultural offer and enhance the urban environment around the station.

“We will use our expertise in developing land around railway assets to deliver a new, vibrant restaurant and bar destination at Leake Street, which pays homage to the area’s creative heritage.”

Union Street Partners partner Neil Davies said: “Some 100m passengers pass through Waterloo Station each year and the fact that the arches are so close by make them an ideal refurbishment and renewal opportunity. Our discussions with local people have identified a demand for exciting and independent brands in the area and we have already had an encouraging level of interest from potential occupiers for the units within the arches.

“We would be excited to continue the collaborative effort between local groups and existing and new businesses, to deliver LCR’s vision for the Leake Street Arches.”
