Leading US architect Philip Johnson dies

Philip Johnson, one of the most famous architects of the last 50 years, has died aged 98.

The Guardian writes that he ahead of his trade for half a century, but “never actually invented it”.

It adds: “When modernist austerity was an aesthetic cause, he was in the vanguard. When the business of American architecture seemed to be business, he was its slickest salesman. Postmodernism was partly of his making. Then, when deconstruction hit New York, Johnson in his 80s was in the thick of the theorists,” writes the paper.

Famous works Johnson was involved with include his own house, the Glass House at New Canaan, Connecticut, where he died, the Seagram Tower in Manhattan, the Kline Science Centre at Yale and the AT&T building in New York.
