Leeds announces grand plan for city centre

A new regeneration project has the potential to double the size of Leeds city centre and add 8,000 new homes and 35,000 new jobs, representatives from Leeds City Council said at MIPIM.

South Bank Leeds, home to the proposed HS2 integrated station, has 235 hectares of land (581 acres) earmarked for development.

It is the biggest development within Leeds City Council’s plan to deliver 16,500 new homes across 40 residential projects and 60 sites identified for future growth.

Developer CEG is bringing forward proposals for a £350m mixed-use redevelopment, with a mix of up to 750 new homes, offices, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants alongside plans for Yorkshire’s tallest residential building.

Jon Kenny, development director at CEG, said: “This is a derelict site where we can deliver a vibrant mixed-use strategic development of a critical mass and international quality that can enable this regeneration area to become a true gateway into the city, reconnecting local communities.”

Meanwhile, Caddick Group’s six-acre mixed-use scheme in Leeds’ cultural quarter will deliver more than 700 new homes, and Moda is developing 515 build-to-rent flats near York Road.

Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Leeds has always enjoyed its reputation as an innovator in the region, and the residential market is no exception.

“Through pioneering partnerships, Leeds is likely to become home to Yorkshire’s tallest residential building and the UK’s largest sustainable housing development in the coming years.”
