Legacy chiefs reveal great estate vision

Baroness Margaret Ford and Andrew Altman – the people tasked with finding a legacy use for the Olympic site in Stratford, E15 – spoke exclusively to Estates Gazette this week, outlining their long-term plans.

Ford and Altman told EG that they saw the Olympic Park Legacy Company’s role as evolving a “great London estate”. They plan to package up small housing sites on the 500-acre Olympic Park and sell them to developers and housebuilders.

They are also investigating the use of community land trusts – non-profit-making property trusts owned by local residents.

Ford said: “We feel that to plan and hold the sites, like one of the great London estates, is an eminently sensible thing to do. But within that we would like to develop a piece of land as a community land trust model. It is an interesting model for the long-term holding of affordable housing in perpetuity.”
