Parishioners of St Mary and St Michael church in Commercial Road, east London, have begun a High Court action against the diocese of Westminster building, a £30m school on land they claim is theirs.
The development would see the creation of modern learning facilities for two secondary schools and a primary school.
Leo Price QC said control lay in deeds from 1851 that were drawn up after it was bought by “poor working people”. The diocese rejected any suggestion it had acted inappropriately. The hearing continues.
