Leicester City FC has won full planning permission for a new 32,000-seater stadium. The stadium will be built on an 8.1ha (20-acre) site close to the existing Filbert Street site, which has been the home of the club since 1891.
In a statement the company said: “We are delighted to announce that yesterday’s meeting of the development control sub-committee of Leicester city council has resolved to approve the company’s planning application for a 32,000-seater stadium and ancillary facilities. The planning permission for the Freeman’s Wharf site on Raw Dykes Road in Leicester is granted subject to the company entering into a Section 106 Agreement and to certain planning conditions.”
A council spokeswoman said that the permission was granted on the basis that the club could only use the old ground for sporting or entertainment events for one or two seasons following completion of the new stadium.
