About 100 volunteers in Leicester are taking part in the UK’s first experiment with road tolls in cities.
The £2.5m project uses a small radio unit in each car to charge a notional fee for driving on one of the main roads linking the city centre with the M1 motorway.
Leicester believes the trial will help shape the transport policies of the next decade. The government and the European Union are backing the scheme. It is being closely monitored ahead of the government’s white paper on integrated transport to be published next spring.
