Leisure and retail complex planned for Northants race track

Rockingham, the UK’s only privately-owned motor racing circuit, has confirmed that it intends to develop a multi-million pound leisure and retail complex on its Northamptonshire site.

A spokesman for the speedway, controlled by former Nomura venture capitalist Guy Hands, said that new chief executive, Ashley Pover, wanted to develop the complex to make Rockingham suitable for “an all-day family experience”.

“Developing a leisure and retail complex is Ashley’s big idea. It is a long-term plan. But at the moment there are no drawings, no meat on the bones,” the spokesman said. He added that plans to float the company were part of a long-term strategy.

The £55m speedway was completed last September and has so far made only marginal returns for its investors.

Pover is understood to see associated development, such as the leisure and retail complex, as the only way to realise full returns.
