Lendlease braces for Haringey Momentum

Lendlease, the council’s partner on its under-pressure £2bn HDV joint venture, has acknowledged that new councillors in the borough of Haringey “may have different views”.

The 6,000-home project is likely to aborted by the council’s new leadership with left-wing Labour faction Momentum likely to be dominant in the area that is already Labour controlled.

Council leader Claire Kober stepped down at the end of January who said that she would not sign off the HDV agreement and that the decision should be left to the next leader.

A new leader will not be determined until next week with candidates including Momentum-backed deputy council leader Joseph Ejiofor.

Jonathan Emery, managing director of property at Lendlease, said: “Regardless of the election results, the need for new homes, including affordable and social housing, is a key priority for local government.

“This need is particularly acute in Haringey and has been recognised by candidates in the run-up to the election.

“Our partnership with Haringey is designed to build more than 6,000 homes and create more than 20,000 jobs for local people. There are also plans to develop community facilities and to provide long-term investment focused on the needs of the next generation.

“However, we accept new councillors may have different views on some of the plans put forward and we look forward to meeting with the borough’s new Leader and cabinet.

“We want to listen and discuss how we can work together to best deliver their vision and create a positive and long-lasting impact for the people of Haringey.”
